F-2 Dependent Health Insurance
F-2 Dependent Health Insurance
Even though not required, Wheaton College highly recommends that dependents (spouses and children) of students have insurance coverage for the entire time they are in the US. Health care costs in the US are very expensive, making insurance for families critical for access to affordable medical care.

Individual Insurance Plan Options
You can research individual insurance plans. Some plans may have exclusions and pre-existing conditions limitations. It is best to consider your medical needs before purchasing a plan. A few examples can be found below:

Medicaid: Medicaid is a US government program that provides free or low-cost health coverage to eligible children and pregnant women. To determine if your family members are eligible, please contact the DuPage County Health Department (630) 682-7400. You can also apply via this website.
Medicaid CAUTION: Students should be advised that there is disagreement about whether F-2 visa holders are authorized to receive government benefits like Medicaid while in the U.S. in non-immigrant status. F-1 visa students and dependents are expected to arrive to the United States with sufficient funds to cover all necessary costs. The argument is that receiving benefits like Medicaid can mean the government considers you a “public charge,” or someone who is using benefits meant for residents and citizens. This is argued even if some guidelines explain that exceptions are made for pregnant women and children. Therefore, we advise caution as you consider if this is something you want to pursue. If the law around “public charge” changes or becomes clearer, receiving Medicaid benefits could impact a future application (new visa, change of status, etc.) for your dependent. For more information, read the current public charge rule from USCIS or contact an immigration attorney.
